Advocacy Services
Our Mental Health Advocacy Partnership (MHAP) started in 1999 and since then has been helping people with mental health problems to stand up for their rights.
MHAP offers an advocacy service to people with mental health problems aged between 18 and 64 years, who live in the following areas - Basildon, Brentwood, Rayleigh, Rochford and Castle Point. You could be living at home or in a hospital.
The Service is available during office hours between 9.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. In exceptional circumstances assistance outside of these hours could be negotiated.

Independent Mental Health Act Advocate
Basildon and Thurrock Mind provide the South Essex Independent Mental Health Advocacy Service (IMHA). The Advocate's role is to help people who are Sectioned under the Mental Health Act to obtain information and understanding of:
- Their rights under the Mental Health Act.
- The rights which other people have in relation to them under the Act.
- The particular parts of the Mental Health Act which applies to them.
- Any conditions or restrictions which may be placed on them as a result.
- Certain medical treatment that is proposed, is being discussed or is being given.
This Advocate can also help preparing for Mental Health Review Tribunals, raising concerns about care or treatment on behalf of the person, accessing other support and services.
