What is Move For Your Mind?

Find Your Active: Move for your Mind is a county-wide movement that highlights the powerful connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or online workouts, there’s something for everyone, it’s just about finding what’s right for you.

Why movement matters

According to National Mind, moving more is good for our physical and mental health. Movement stimulates the release of endorphins – your body’s natural happiness boosters – helping to build resilience and leaving you feeling more balanced, energised, and ready to take on life’s challenges with a clearer mind. It can also help to:

  • Manage stress
  • Improve sleep
  • Boost your mood
  • Increase your confidence
  • Manage symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Improve memory and brain function
  • Improve heart, muscle and bone health
  • Reduce the risk of developing some long-term conditions

We know that there are times when getting active feels difficult, especially if you’re living with chronic pain or a mental health condition that affects motivation. Others may find themselves over‑exercising or navigating challenges such as an eating disorder or body dysmorphic disorder, which can also make movement feel complicated.

If you are living with a condition, you may want to speak to your GP or a health professional before you get started, to make sure you begin exercising in a safe way.

What are the barriers to moving more?

We know that there are times when we struggle with being active. Living with a mental health condition that affects your motivation, or experiencing chronic pain, may be an issue. Some people also may over-exercise or struggle with mental health conditions such as an eating disorder or body dysmorphic disorder.

If you are living with a condition, you may want to speak to your GP or a health professional before you get started, to make sure you begin exercising in a safe way.
