Alan’s Experience Of Our YOGA FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
“I am now more flexible in my body and much happier in myself”
Hello, I am Alan a 73-year-old male. I lost my wife of over 47 years in October 2021 to cancer, this really hurt, but we all try to move on. It took a while but I slowly got myself together to start anew. My good friends in my Caravan Centre and Allotment friends were of great help here. Unfortunately in August 2023 I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer. This led to hormone therapy, followed by radiotherapy.
Basildon Hospital set up Basildon Urology Group Support (Bugs) in May 2024. This was soon after my radiotherapy treatment and on their Facebook page was a flyer for Basildon Mind’s Yoga for your Mental Health group (sponsored by for 2 years at that time) with teacher Sarah Green, starting if I recall in the June. I liked the idea and having become a couch potato from losing my wife and gaining Prostate cancer I thought I should do something about my poor flexibility and feeling low. So with it being local to me (in Laindon) I signed up.
Sarah's program consists of light yoga and stretching, followed by 30-minutes’ ‘Yoga Nidra’ which is a form of meditation. The class is followed by tea and biscuits with a chat with other participants. The other participants come from all walks of life and are different ages with different things they want to talk about. Sometimes during the chats an idea comes to a participant that they take away with them to see if it would help them. We also have the odd laugh.
I am more flexible in my body and much happier in myself through joining this group. After all it is company that we all seek to talk about whatever is pulling us down
With Sarah's encouragement I also now attend some of her more challenging classes in Yoga and have another group of people I can talk to. Again there is something to laugh about.
I have encouraged others from the Bugs group to try Sarah's program and they also enjoy it. So come on join us and give it a try, you never know what benefit you might gain. And I haven’t mentioned that it’s FREE. Thank you Alan.
